  • Dawn ♥ romance

I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. I was absorbed throughout this 600+ page book with all the exciting action and twists and turns. I liked seeing characters from early books. Heroine was terrific and hero eventually atoned. Psychologist Meredith is held at gunpoint, barely escapes and in panic calls old flame detective Adam who leads what turns into a complex investigation.

    There are three things you

get in a Karen Rose novel: 1) a lot of bodies; 2) a hot romance; 3) a mystery that grabs you and won't let you go. What more can you ask from any Romantic-Suspense book? You can read this one as a standalone, but at the least, you should read the other Cincinnati Series books as these main characters are supporting in those earlier books. If reading the whole 20 book series seems daunting, a better series you won't find.

Adam Kimble was a real asswipe in the previous books. A pretty boy with a huge chip on his shoulder and a lot of unresolved issues. No one redeems a bad boy better than Karen Rose. Meredith Fallon is a rock for everyone around her. No one has a clue that there is quicksand under that rock. Adam and Meredith smashed up against each other a year ago and the wreckage wasn't pretty. Adam had his reasons for his hit and run, but it shook Meredith to her very foundation.

Now, someone wants Child Psychologist Meredith Fallon dead and isn't concerned at all about the collateral damage. This killer's scotched earth tactics have CPD Detective Adam Kimble facing his own demons and coming face to face with Meredith for the first time in almost a year. It's time he makes amends for the way he left things a year ago and to tell her exactly why he did what he did. Together they need to discover who wants Meredith dead and why in order to keep her safe.

This carries on the segment that this author has involved her readers in set in and around Cincinnati and honestly I somehow suspect that several of these characters will be revisited no matter what the synopsis says. Why do I feel this? Well honestly there are just so many characters involved here that the author would be crazy not to go back at some point and flesh them out more. That's also unfortunately why I knocked a half mark off as because it's such an ensemble piece I did initially find myself trying to remember who had done what before and in which book so it kind of took me out the story at times.

That all being said what about the story? Well it was lovely to see the old gang rally round with their protective and so very often teasing attitudes. As a fan of this series I knew that Adam struggled with events that were truly harrowing but those around him don't truly realise just how low he's driven himself. To be blunt he's a recovering drunk in love with a woman that he feels he doesn't deserve but Meredith doesn't quite fit on the pedestal that Adam has placed her on .

Everything comes crashing to a head when it appears there's a target painted on Merediths back. It all ties in with the young woman that Meredith and her friends are trying to introduce back into normal life after abysmal abuse but the trouble is there are other victims still out there with a killer determined to silence all those loose ends !

Essentially this is the tale of two damaged people connecting at what is a violent and frightening time in their lives . The author pulls her readers in with scenes from the point of view of her villain which really ramps up the intensity of the plot . It's positively frightening that such evil perpetrators can pose as essentially normal everyday folks but I get that surely that's why psychopaths can and do live undetected amongst us . I loved following the trail laid down in order to uncover just who the bad guy was but most of all I really enjoyed catching up with characters that have drawn me in previously and for this reader that meant quality time with Deacon ! However it's not as dark as some previous stories and the author found time for lighter moments as her cast teased, cajoled and knitted !

This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

series by Karen Rose. It is a gripping and emotional romantic suspense novel. The main characters are interesting and well-developed and the story moves along quickly, drawing you from one twist to the next. However, while it is a stand-alone novel, the sheer number of characters can get confusing if you haven’t read the previous books.

has a fascinating cast of recurring characters, but this novel focuses on Meredith Fallon and Adam Kimble.

After their “one-night stand” last year, Meredith knows that Adam has been avoiding her. She’s hurt, but as a counselor she knows that Adam, a police detective, is suffering from PTSD resulting from a bad case last year and needs to focus on himself and she doesn’t want to be a distraction. Well, she’d rather be with him and supportive, but he doesn’t seem to want that. Adam is doing everything he can to remain a part of Meredith’s life, while not actually being a part of her life. He spends much of his free time supporting Mariposa House where Meredith works counseling sexually abused women like Mallory Martin to help them reintegrate into the world, but scheduling his time so he doesn’t run into Meredith.

Meredith and Mallory are sitting down to enjoy a celebratory lunch, when a young man comes into the restaurant with a gun. Apparently, someone does not want Meredith helping women like Mallory and will resort to extreme measures to stop her. Adam and Meredith are forced back together as Adam is called into investigate. Can Adam protect Meredith and still keep his distance from her?

There are so many questions and interesting sub-stories. Each time you think you’ve got it figured out, Karen Rose throws in a twist to keep you guessing right until the end.

    I really enjoyed

and look forward to reading more by Karen Rose particularly the

series. I highly recommend this romantic suspense. 4.5 stars

I had never read Karen Rose, but having heard so much about her books, I thought I would try this. It turns out this might not have been the best decision as it is the 4th in the Cincinnati series, with characters from other books in the series turning up here. It meant that at times I felt a little at a loss, not having read others in the series. Nevertheless, I still managed to enjoy reading this thriller. Adam Kimble is a homicide detective who had a short lived relationship in the past with Meredith Fallon, a child psychologist. Meredith has never forgotten him and doesn't understand why he has gone to such lengths to avoid her. However, Adam is an emotionally damaged man, suffering from PTSD, and struggling to recover. He is about to discover just what Meredith means to him.

Meredith works with sexually abused children, something she feels a complete commitment to. She has been doing some intensive counselling work with a traumatised Mallory Martin. They are out celebrating their successes, when a gunman fails to carry out a mission he is being forced into. Having failed to shoot Meredith, the gunman is then shot and Meredith barely makes it out alive. Why would anyone want to kill Meredith? In a complex investigation, more deaths take place as it appears that a ruthless killer does not want Meredith to do the kind of work that she does. Adam finds that he will do anything to protect Meredith. Their relationship develops as Meredith finds out exactly what is troubling Adam. She then in turn tells him about the traumas in her own life. It soon becomes clear that the murderer is rather closer to home than Adam and Meredith might imagine.

This is a fast paced read focusing on two damaged people who manage to connect with each other emotionally. Whilst this might not have been the best Karen Rose book to read, I am glad that I did read it. It has two central strands running through it, that of the hunt for the killer, and that of the slowly evolving relationship between the two protagonists. A gripping read that I found entertaining and absorbing. Many thanks to Headline for an ARC.

Meredith Fallon takes Mallory Martin out to lunch to celebrate her first day out since being rescued four months ago after being held captive for six years. She’s signed up for adult education classes, a major step towards taking control of her life after months of therapy. However, what happens at that café is just the beginning of a killing spree that confounds law enforcement and the targets are unclear.

These books may be long (24 hours of listening) but it’s just so delicious to come back to them for a few days. I hate putting them down and this one is no different. I remembered from the last story that an important element (or person) was left dangling after Mallory’s abductor was taken down and was hoping it would be resolved here. Thankfully it was, which made this such a chilling story. We also, finally, learn what’s been going on with Adam Kimball...why he was so obnoxious to his cousin Deacon and put distance between Meredith and himself. Even more thrilling is we don’t know the identity of the leader, even an alias name, throughout until the big reveal. Loved that. Everything worked here from the mystery, suspense, and thrills to the romance and family dynamics.

I can’t believe I’ve finally caught up, not something I set as a goal because I’ve liked knowing I could read one whenever I wanted. Rose is the best in this genre, one of my auto-buy authors and this book is just another reason why. The return of so many earlier characters just sweetened the experience. And, Hillary Huber’s narration was excellent. Now, my wait begins for the next release. 4.5 stars
